Capricon 46: Rise of the Humans
Rumors of our demise at the hands of technology are as old as technology itself. Whether viewed as cautionary tale or instruction manual, these stories of humanity creating the technology that will ultimately destroy humanity have captivated us over ages.
Whether concocting utopian visions of a less tumultuous future, nightmares of servitude under AI run amok, or techno-feudalist conglomerate overlords, this is a very well explored part of the human story in science fiction. All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again. Exploitative technology creation is a defining factor of our humanity.
What direction do we want to go? Technology fueled utopia or dystopia? Back to a simpler, less technology focused society? Is a benevolent AI possible? Are all of these just distractions from a more people-based problem? If so, then what will we do about it?
We can do more than dream – we can take the helm. Get involved with the creation of our future! Our growth will require some pruning and some nurturing both. It’s time to throw some bricks but also save some bricks with which to build our community.

Announcing Capricon’s New Home
We are thrilled to announce that we have a new home!

We listened to your feedback, and we think we have found a really good resolution for everyone. Here’s the highlights:
Location, location, location: This hotel is right off of I-90 at Cumberland. There is also an exit from the Cumberland Blue Line stop into the parking lot of the hotel. This makes it very easy to get to from the city, from the suburbs, and from O’Hare. There is a complimentary shuttle to and from O’Hare every 30 minutes.
Parking: We have negotiated a discounted rate for parking, which is $15 per day (24 hours) for both attendees staying at the hotel and commuting to the hotel. Parking includes in/out privileges.
Room Rates: There is no increase in room rates, with all rooms available for $130/night (plus taxes). This includes suites, so our party hosts will be able to get the same rate for a suite! This rate is available for two days pre/post convention for those who wish to arrive before Thursday or leave after Sunday.
Hotel Features: Complimentary internet in all guest rooms. Refrigerators in all guest rooms. There is an indoor/outdoor pool and a fitness center available for guests to use. The Marriott has their restaurant, Brickton, which is open daily from 6:30am – 11pm. They also have a coffee shop / bar located in the lobby. We are working with the hotel to provide custom menu options and discounted meal deals for our attendees. We very much encourage our attendees to utilize the food options in the hotel as a way of saying “thank you for having us” to the Marriott!
What’s Nearby: There is a Mariano’s grocery store (we’re looking out for you, party hosts!) and a 7-11 near the hotel (all under 0.3 miles walking distance). An even shorter walk to the Blue Line and the in/out parking privileges offer easy access to all the attractions in Rosemont, one L-stop away, plus easy access for getting into the rest of Chicago!
