Euchre Tournament Winners

Congratulations to the Michigan Masters, Paul & Kathy Lehman, on winning this year’s Euchre Tournament!

Gopher of the Year

Most of the Capricon 45 award winners were announced at Closing Ceremonies. The Gopher of the Year award was identified only by first name, and at the last possible moment – which is what happens when your Chairs ask for details from their busy staff at the last possible moment. Congratulations and all our appreciation goes out to Cath Biagioli, who helped by rounding out so many volunteer shifts throughout the weekend!

Staff Awards

Speaking of our Gophers lead, newcomer to the department but hardly new to fannish staff roles, we also recognize Louisa Feimster with a Staff award for her hard work both before and during the convention. She stepped into the role on short notice and worked the entirety of the convention to make sure every necessary volunteer shift was filled. When she wasn’t recruiting at the Volunteer Desk by Registration, it’s because she was filling a shift elsewhere in the building. As we both mentioned during both Opening and Closing Ceremonies, it takes a village to run a convention, and Louisa actively worked to expand the size of our village and build a foundation going into the next year.

Jason Vassos jumped head first into his role in Operations with a high level of enthusiasm and a low level of sleep for most of the weekend. He worked closely with Louisa to determine where volunteers were needed and helped provision our overnight guards with walkie-talkies connecting them directly to Operations. As part of his role, Jason also worked the edge days – on-site Wednesday and leaving Monday – clearly demonstrating his dedication both in his work and when, after the convention, he asked one of the Chairs how he can help next year.

Andrea Hawkins-Kamper’s initial assignment was to put on the Capricious costume for Opening Ceremonies and be a liaison for one of our Guests of Honor. She identified a need to mentor some of our newer staff, assigning herself as a much needed role model, picking up significantly more work on-site than she had expected. She is precisely the type of volunteer that we hope for at every convention, making sure the work gets done and tutoring other staff members in the what, where, and why of what she is doing.

Matt C. brought a tremendous amount of energy and expertise to his role as Hotel Liaison, including his past experience working on the hotel side of things. He dug into the contract, identified areas of concern, then proactively planned solutions and worked with the hotel to make our convention experience as smooth as possible this year. His attention to detail undoubtedly saved the convention money, with the added bonus of being an absolute delight to work with.

Yes, that makes four Staff awards, unprecedented, but not surprising when you realize these are only examples of an incredibly hard working staff, a cast of so many Department Heads and volunteers who stepped in to make Capricon 45 a fabulous event.

And thank you again to Jessie Kroschel (long-time award creator for Capricon) and Lisa Meece (at Clever Girl Design) for providing us the plethora of awards.
