Art Show

CALL FOR ATTENDING ARTISTS

We are looking to have a quick-draw and an iron artist competition in the art show this year. Please email artshow@capricon.org if you would like to participate in either or both.
We will also be providing space should you wish to do a demonstration as a programming item.  Please email artshow@capricon.org if you would like to participate.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

We need people to help hang the show, help run the show, to repackage and mail back unsold artwork, etc. Let us know if would like to help.

Art Show Rules

These rules set forth how we plan to handle the Show, the Auction, the Print Shop, the Awards, and the Artist's Challenge. If you have Art Show related questions or suggestions, or want to volunteer contact us at: artshow@capricon.org.

PRINT SHOP

Artists who have multiple prints of a piece, particularly pieces with high run numbers should enter them into the print shop, where they will have a set price, and share space as available with other artists. These are pieces for immediate sale only - no bidding occurs on these pieces.

THE ART SHOW

Work displayed in the Art Show is usually for sale, although we will occasionally accept a "Not For Sale" display of a significant piece if space is available.
The show starts with a silent bid auction. Each piece has a bid sheet on which the Artist sets the Minimum Bid that the Artist will take for that piece.
The highest bid written on the sheet AT OR ABOVE the minimum bid set by the artist is considered the winning bidder, provided they are the first, second, or third bid on the sheet. A bit of advice - never list a minimum bid that will make you sad if the piece sells at that price.
Works that receive three (3) bids during the silent auction are then placed in the Live Art Auction on Saturday evening. Over the years, we have had great auctioneers, and we expect to be impressed and amused again this year.
Once the piece is placed in the live auction, the auctioneers will seek an advance on the highest bid on the sheet. If no advance on the last written bid is received, the piece is considered to be "sold to the sheet" and the highest written bid will be the sale price.
The winning bidder for a piece is asked to pick up and pay for their purchases on Sunday morning, (frequently we also open up for payment late on Saturday; this depends on staffing). Pieces that do not sell are picked up by the artists or mailed back to artists who participate by mail.

WHAT WE MEAN BY "UNIQUE"

A work is "Unique" if it is an original work by the artist or a single print from a limited print run, signed and numbered by the artist. If you want to show or sell multiple copies of a print, see the Print Shop rules below. If you want to put up a painting in the Unique show and prints from that painting in the Print Shop that's fine. You may not hang a print in the Unique show while putting identical prints (even if a different size) in the print shop.

DISPLAY SPACE & CHARGES

Unique Art

We have 18” by 6’ tables and 2’ by 7’ grid available for Unique Art. The Art Show charges a $0.50 (50 cents) per piece hanging fee for pieces with a minimum bid of less than $100. Pieces with a minimum bid of $100 or more and NFS pieces have a $1.00 hanging fee per piece. In addition, a 10% commission is charged on every sale.
S-Hooks and binder clips will be provided. Space is generally allocated on a first come, first choice basis except for what has been set aside for the Artist GOH. We reserve the right to limit the number of panels and tables used by any one artist. Our room is large, and I expect space to be available as artists check in Thursday and early Friday. There are no guarantees, however, so send in your reservation (and payment) today. Checks should be made out to Capricon 30 and mailed to:

Print Shop

We set aside an area, usually with tables, sometimes with grid to help in the display. You can set up your work within the print shop, but expect to share space with other artists. We reserve the right to move or re-arrange your prints so that other artists have a fair share of the available space. A 10% commission is charged on all print shop sales.

DISPLAY REQUIREMENTS

All two-dimensional work must be matted and/or framed. All artwork must have the artist's name and contact information securely attached to it, preferably on the back of it. In the interest of keeping confusion to a minimum each piece of art must have a unique name (Ex: "Goat Power" is unique. "Goat #1", "Goat #2", and "Goat #3" are too easily mixed up.) All print shop pieces must be clearly priced by the artist. You will need to fill out a bid sheet for each unique piece in the show. You will need to fill out a control sheet for all of your work. Capricon does not accept artwork for resale.

We do not have display cases or other ways to secure easily portable pieces. We encourage you to protect your smaller pieces by bringing in your own display case or mounting and bagging so they can be hung with the s-hooks and binder clips.

THE ARTIST'S CHALLENGE

You are challenged to submit a piece, in any medium, having a science fiction or fantasy theme that includes a goat and any 3 of the following items:

  • A tunnel
  • The Birdman of Alcatraz
  • A straightjacket
  • A glider
  • A pennyfarthing

If you are submitting a piece to the Artist’s Challenge, please make sure it is labeled as such on the control sheet and on the bid sheet.

AWARDS

All Unique works (NFS included) are eligible to receive awards. Judging is done during the day on Saturday. Awards are announced and given out at the Art Auction on Saturday Night.
This year we will be giving out four awards:

  • Best In Show
  • Best Piece by a Pro
  • Best Piece by a Fan
  • Best Met Challenge (Artist's Challenge)

MAILING IN ART

While you coming to the show with your art is much preferred, we will display your mailed in work if:

  1. It is received no later than February 6, 2010.
  2. Is mailed to:
    Capricon Art Show
    c/o Kerry Kuhn
    419 Springsouth Rd.
    Schaumburg, IL 60193
  3. Include a filled out control sheet and one bid sheet attached to each piece that is not Print Shop. Please label your art work clearly with your name and the title to aid in hanging.
  4. Artists should supply return postage and a mailing label with their own address on it, or a shipping method (UPS, DHL, FEDEX) label with a prepaid container or a label with an account number on it. If you don't provide return postage, we won't mail your package back to you. If you don't provide for insurance, we won't buy insurance. We intend to mail out the return shipments the week after the convention, by whatever priority service or shipping method you have supplied return packaging/labeling for. If none is specified, return shipment will be made via UPS ground.
  5. Your packaging material must be reusable. If we can't re-use your packaging, we will do our best.
  6. If your work requires special handling, contact us before you send it.

If you are intending to send a representative to the Art Show to act on your behalf, please provide a Letter of Authorization signed by you. The letter should contain:

  1. The name of your agent.
  2. A list of the things your agent is authorized to do on your behalf (e.g., receive money for artwork, present art work for auction, negotiate with Capricon officials regarding sales of art work, negotiate with individuals, etc.)
