Hello Campers!

Welcome to Capricon 29 - Camp Capricon! I'm thrilled to be chairing this year's convention. It's exciting to be able to bring you our fannish version of camp, an idea which has been floating around in my head the last few years. We have some wonderful guests lined up, and are planning several events that we are sure you will all enjoy.

Most of us have been to camp at some point in our lives. We have the good memories - meeting up with old friends and making new ones, creating new things (Popsicle sticks, anyone?), learning new skills, S'mores around the campfire. We may also have the not-so-good memories - bugs, rocks under the sleeping bag, sunburn, latrines. Camp Capricon aims to bring you all of the good without any of the bad! We will have opportunities for you to learn something new, complete with earning merit patches! We have a wonderful new campground (hotel) which will be bug-free with comfy beds and luxurious bathrooms! We will have several spaces throughout the hotel where you and your friends can gather, including our renowned "evening hospitality" rooms. Of course, there will be S'mores. Our goal is that you leave Camp Capricon feeling thoroughly satisfied with the experience.

Of course, we need you in order to meet that goal. We welcome volunteers for all areas - anything from being an assistant or staff member on the convention committee to badging a door for an hour. If you are interested, please email volunteers @ capricon.org and let them know. We also welcome your ideas and participation for programming and events. If you have an idea or wish to submit a request to be on programming, you can email programming @ capricon.org. A full list of committee members and contact information can be found here.

We also need you to register for the convention! We will be represented at Windycon later in 2008 where you can pre-register in person, you can download and print out a registration form here to mail in, or you can register online right here. As part of our efforts to make Capricon "greener", we are offering you the option of opting out of receiving our paper mailing this fall and getting it via email instead.

Since everyone needs a backpack to hold all their gear at camp, we are offering a free Camp Capricon backpack, on a first come, first served basis to you when you pre-register. The first 200 pre-registered attendees will receive an "early bird" merit patch when they arrive at the convention. All of the embroidered merit patches that you can earn at the convention can be heat-pressed or sewn onto the backpacks (and learning how to do either will even earn you another merit patch!) during the convention itself.

Please keep an eye on our website and our forums throughout the year, as we continue to update you on our progress for the convention, as well as other fannish gatherings that are happening, such as our book club and euchre club.

Again, welcome to Camp Capricon!

Helen Montgomery
