Notable science fiction, fantasy and pirate artist Don Maitz (http://www.paravia.com/DonMaitz) will be the Artist Guest of Honor for Capricon 28!

Don Maitz is, among other things, the artist behind Captain Morgan's rum. For the past couple of years, he has released a Pirates! Calendar, and has his artwork featured in multiple museums across the nation.

 

Enthusiastic reception and international acclaim have surrounded the imaginative paintings of Don Maitz for nearly 30 years. His" A- Maitz -ing" artwork first appeared on book covers and has expanded into other arenas. 

Clients include; National Geographic Magazine (May 1999), Seagrams & Sons, (for whom Maitz created the CAPTAIN MORGAN SPICED RUM character) New York Publishing Houses, Paramount and Warner Brothers Studios where Maitz has worked on the animated feature films, JIMMY NEUTRON BOY GENIUS and ANT BULLY as concept and production artist.  The  2006 & 2007 Pirates! Calendar by Don Maitz sold out and a 2008 edition is hanging about on walls now.  The Today Show, Wife Swap, The History Channel, and Dateline NBC all included Maitz pirate art in their broadcasts. Maitz pirate art has been included in several National Geographic publications including the May 1999 issue of the magazine. Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlin, Tennessee reproduced his art as part of a "Predators of the Sea" exhibit. 
 
Exhibitions of Maitz's pirate works have been displayed all over the United States- most recently : The DOOR COUNTY LIGHTHOUSE AND MARITIME MUSEUM , Sturgeon Bay, WI  hanging 25 works, and the SOUTH FLORIDA MUSEUM, Bradenton, FL.  Previous exhibits include the MARINERS MUSEUM - Newport News, VA  -  2006-2007.  The OSHKOSH PUBLIC MUSEUM- Oshkosh, WI, - the SAN DIEGO MARITIME MUSEUM - San Diego, CA, the ORLANDO HISTORY CENTER, the KEY WEST MUSEUM OF ART & HISTORY, the FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM, and the Twenty Fourth International Exhibition at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport in Mystic,  Connecticut in 2006 where he received an award of excellence.  

After graduation with honors from the Paier School of Art in 1975, Don Maitz  received numerous awards and world wide recognition for his artwork in the field of imaginative art, among them, Ten Chesley  awards,  two Hugo awards and a World Fantasy award for best artist. He has also received a Sliver Medal from the Society of Illustrators.  His paintings have been displayed in the NEW BRITAIN MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART,  THE DELAWARE ART MUSEUM, THE HAYDEN PLANETARIUM, and the CANTON ART MUSEUM.   Don helped to initiate the first group exhibition of fantastic art in an American art museum .  Each of these exhibitions  produced record breaking attendance at the host facility.   Don Maitz resides in Florida with his wife,  Janny Wurts,  who is a published novelist and artist.
